OUR FOOD

WELCOME TO THE ELDER PRESS CAFE

Our menu is inspired by our love for seasonal, wholesome and nourishing foods. Our seasonal staple dishes are offered alongside our ever-changing specials board, inspired by the freshest seasonal ingredients around. Our team starts early every morning to prepare tasty breakfasts, brunches and lunches and bake our morning buns, bread and cakes. We are renowned for our excellent coffee supplied by Ozone, loose leaf teas and health-giving smoothies. We choose our produce from the best suppliers and favour small, local producers to populate our deli shelves where you can buy and take home our carefully curated selection.

 OUR CAFE

SERIOUSLY RELAXED

Inspired by the local community, chef Lindsay Elder established The Elder Press Cafe in 2019 to create a hub for gatherings, chat, good coffee and tasty treats. The elegant restoration of this former building merchants has created an oasis of delight very close to the River Thames in Hammersmith. The palette of pinks and greens has echoes of Wes Anderson, fresh flowers decorate the tables and the patio garden has an almost Mediterranean feel. Lindsay is a very hands-on chef and you’ll often see her working in the kitchen with her lovely team. Here you’ll find the perfect place to enjoy your tasty treats or pick up a take-away to enjoy by the river.

 OUR CULTURAL COMMUNITY

The area is simply oozing in rich creative history. It is said that at the turn of the 20th century, three streets in West London decided the course of English typography. Those three streets are Black Lion Lane, Hammersmith Terrace and Upper Mall - the main players William Morris, Emery Walker, T.J. Cobden-Sanderson, Edward Johnston and Eric Gill - who all lived and worked locally.

The Doves Type, infamous for being thrown over Hammersmith Bridge by Cobden-Sanderson, was designed for the Doves Press - originally at 1 Hammersmith Terrace, a stone’s throw from the cafe. Edward Johnston and Emery Walker lived in Hammersmith Terrace and Eric Gill lived in Black Lion Lane. William Morris was just downstream at Kelmscott House.

Mary Fedden and Julian Trevelyan’s studio was at Durham Wharf, just 100 yards up river. Just along Upper Mall, Eric Ravilious and Tirzah Garwood lived on the corner of Weltje Road. A magnificent seahorse by Gertrude Hermes can be spotted atop the squash court in the garden of Rivercourt House on Upper Mall (commissioned by the extraordinary Naomi Mitchison in the 1930s).

Just across the A4 (that bisected the community in 1956) St Peter’s Square can proudly boast some notable residents, amongst others, John Piper, Robert Graves, Laura Riding, Island Records, Alec Guinness and Vanessa Redgrave. The artistic community lives on today fuelled by morning buns, good coffee and a seriously relaxed home from home.
